Ice Therapy – Decreases pain, swelling, inflammation, and muscle spasm/cramping. Risks of ice therapy: Prolonged use can cause frostbite.
Cold Therapy – Place pack flat in freezer for 1 to 2 hours. Remove from freezer, wrap in a towel and apply to affected area for 15-20 minutes per hour or as medically prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Heat Therapy – relieves stress, relieves pain, relaxes muscles, flushes toxins and increase circulation. Risks of heat therapy: Toasted skin syndrome, also known as erythema ab igne, is a condition that causes skindiscoloration, itching, and burning sensations. This happens after your skin is exposed to a heat source repeatedly over a long period of time, but the heat is not hot enough to actually burn your skin. Heat may also increase swelling and inflammation; using heat for too long or at temperatures that are too high can cause burns. If you have an infection and use heat therapy, there is a chance that the heat therapy could increase the riskof the infection spreading.
Place pack in a microwave safe container. Heat pack for 20-30 seconds. Remove from microwave & check the temperature. If temperature is still not warm enough, microwave for an additional 15-20 seconds until desired temperature is reached. If it is too hot, wait until it cools before applying.
If desired temperature has been reached, wrap in a towel or an ice pack cover and apply to affected area for 15-20 minutes per hour or as medically prescribed by your healthcare provider.
